Utah Commercial driver license (CDL) when coming from out-of-state - U.S. Citizen
To get a Utah CDL
- You must pass a 25-question open-book written knowledge test.
- If you currently have a Hazmat endorsement, it requires a federal background check completed within the last five (5) years and a specialized written knowledge test.
- A school bus endorsement would require a specialized written knowledge test.
- All CDL written knowledge tests are administered in English only, and the use of any translation materials is prohibited.

Gather your documents - must bring to appointment
- Bring your valid CDL from another state (which you will surrender upon application.)
- Bring your DOT card to be verified.
- Bring proof of identity (name and date of birth.)
- Bring your social security card.
- Bring two (2) documents providing proof of your Utah address.
- If your name has changed, bring proof of your new name.
At your appointment
- Have your confirmation number ready to check-in
- Have photo taken
- Present documents
- Take eye test
- Pay non-refundable fee of $52.00, plus each CDL endorsement is $9.00; motorcycle endorsement is $18.00.
- You will then take any required written knowledge tests

When do I get my license?
- A temporary license with a photo will be issued on the same day.
- The completed license with a 5-year expiration date will be mailed to you in approximately 4-6 weeks.
