Driving skills test

Before you can get your license, you need to pass the behind-the-wheel driving skills test.

You have three (3) options for completing your driving skills test:

1. Schedule the test with us

2. Take the test through your driver education course

3. Test with a third-party tester

Any person may be asked to complete a driving skills test if the examiner thinks the applicant’s driving ability may be in question.

Results Sent Electronically

  • If you take the driving skills test at your local high school or a private school/tester, the results are sent electronically to the Utah Driver License Division and added to your driving record.

Third-party tester information

What are third-party testers?
  • Third-party testers are companies or individuals we have certified to give the driving skills test.
  •  Many of them offer testing for a fee.
  • After you finish the test with a third-party tester, they'll send the results to the Driver License Division electronically.
  • Use this map to find a tester near you
You can't use a third-party tester if
  • You have a Utah driver license and a doctor, another medical professional, or a police officer has asked you to take the driving skills test.
  • The Driver License Division has asked you to do more hours of driver training.
The Driver License Division, under the authority of UCA 53-3-501 and Utah Administrative Rule R708-2, regulates commercial driving schools.
