Getting your first-time Utah limited-term driver license

Not U.S Citizen with lawful presence, refugee/asylee/humanitarian (Afghan) parolee age 20 and younger

  • There are several steps in the process of getting your license
  • You will need to visit a DLD office at least two times during the process

Get learner permit

    • Bring required documents to DLD appointment
    • Get permit to start practicing driving
    • Ages 15-18: You are required to hold your permit for 6 months
  1. Take online Traffic Safety & Trends exam

    • Learner permit number required to register
    • Must pass with 100%
    Register and take exam
  2. Take driver education (required ages 15-18) OR prove 40 hours of practice driving and hold permit for 3 months (age 19 & over)

    • 10 hours of the practice driving must be after sunset
    Age 15-18: Get driver education information
    Age 19 & over: Get driver education information
  3. Take behind-the-wheel driving skills test

    • There are 3 options for taking this test

When you are ready for or have completed your driving skills test
