Process to Get Learner Permit

  1. Be at least 15 years old
  2. Fill out an application online - after you're done, you'll get the link to make an appointment
  3. Make an appointment at a DLD office - walk-ins wait a lot longer!
  4. Gather your documents - proof of identity, proof of residence
  5. Study for the 50-question written test
  6. Bring your documents & parent/guardian to your appointment
  7. Have your photo taken
  8. Take & pass the eye test
  9. Submit $19 non-refundable fee
  10. Take & pass the 50-question test
  11. Get permit - if you pass all the tests and meet all the requirements, you'll get your permit
  12. Next step - take driver education class
  13. Practice driving - 40 hours total, 10 at night

Teen Driver Restrictions

If you're 15 or 16 years old and getting ready to drive in Utah, it's important to know the rules for young drivers. Here's what you need to understand:

Nighttime Driving Restrictions

Between 12 am and 5 am, you cannot drive on any public roadway unless you are:

    • Sitting next to a licensed driver at least 21 years old
    • Traveling to and from work, school, or home
    • Performing in agricultural operations
    • Responding to an emergency

    Passenger Restrictions - Immediate Family Members Only

    Until you've held your driver license for six months or until you turn 18, you cannot drive with non-immediate family members, except if you are:

      • Sitting next to a licensed driver at least 21 years old
      • Performing agricultural operations
      • Responding to an emergency
