MINOR ORIGINAL LIMITED-TERM IDENTIFICATION CARD (ID)

  1. What You Need to Know

    • You qualify for a limited-term ID card if you are not a U.S. citizen but are in the country and have an approved lawful presence status.
    • DPC (driving privilege card) applicants are not eligible for an ID card.
    • An ID card is not a license to drive, it is for identification purposes only.
    • If you are under the age of 16 you must have a parent or legal guardian sign for you.

  2. What You Need to Do

    • Fill out an online application and schedule an appointment to visit a driver license office.
    • When you arrive for your scheduled appointment, have your confirmation number ready to check in, and then you will take a photo.
    • After your photo, you will have a seat; when your number is called, you will present your documents to the examiner, and pay the non-refundable fee of $23.00.

  3. What You Need to Bring

    • Bring proof of lawful presence and identity (name and date of birth.)
      • A S.A.V.E. verification will be run to verify your document status (this process may take up to 14 days.)  To understand S.A.V.E verifications, click here.
      • If you need to have your documents translated into English, click here for an approved translator list.
    • Bring your social security card or proof of ineligibility to obtain a social security number.
    • Bring two (2) documents providing proof of your Utah address.

  5. When Do I Get My ID Card?

    • A temporary limited-term identification card with a photo will be issued on the same day.  
    • The completed identification card will have an expiration date of your legal presence document or five (5) years, whichever is sooner; or 1-year from the date of issuance if there is no expiration date, and will then be mailed to you in approximately 4-6 weeks.
    6. Attention: By law, you may not possess more than one REAL ID-compliant certificate at a time (e.g., a Utah license and a Colorado ID.)
