How many questions are there?
  • Never licensed: 50-question closed-book test
  • Previously licensed: 25-question open-book test

If you fail the test
  • Number of attempts: You can take the test twice in one day
  • Fees: After three attempts, you’ll need to pay another fee

Some applicants can take the written knowledge test in a language other than English

  • Only for some applying for a new or renewed regular (Class D) driver license or learner permit.

Who CAN take the test in another language?

  • Refugee/asylee or covered humanitarian (Afghan) parolee
  • Applying for a regular driver license only
  • Can only test in different language for first renewal in 5 years

Who CANNOT take the test in another language?

  • Other limited-term applicants
  • Driving privilege card applicants
  • Applicants who cannot establish legal/lawful presence
  • Commercial driver license applicants
