Written Knowledge Test
What is on the written test?
- All questions are based on information in the Utah driver handbook
How many questions are there?
- Never licensed: 50-question closed-book test
- Previously licensed: 25-question open-book test
If you fail the test
- Number of attempts: You can take the test twice in one day
- Fees: After three attempts, you’ll need to pay another fee
To retake a test
- if you already applied for a license or permit
- Schedule an appointment for your re-test
- No new application is needed
- Bring your receipt or no-privilege document

Some applicants can take the written knowledge test in a language other than English
- Only for some applying for a new or renewed regular (Class D) driver license or learner permit.
Who CAN take the test in another language?
- Refugee/asylee or covered humanitarian (Afghan) parolee
- Applying for a regular driver license only
- Can only test in different language for first renewal in 5 years
Who CANNOT take the test in another language?
- Other limited-term applicants
- Driving privilege card applicants
- Applicants who cannot establish legal/lawful presence
- Commercial driver license applicants
