Renew limited-term license - not US citizen with lawful presence

Renewal information:

  • You can renew your limited-term driver license six (6) months before the expiration date.
  • Online renewal is not an option.
  • If you renew before your 21st birthday, your license will still show minor.  You would not be issued an "adult" limited-term driver license until on or after your 21st birthday.
  • If you have received more than one (1) citation in one (1) year, have been suspended or revoked, or your license has been expired for more than six (6) months, you will be required to complete a 25-question open-book written knowledge test.

Test translation and language information for refugee/asylee/covered humanitarian (Afghan) parolee:

  • Renewal without testing in English: You can renew your limited-term driver license for up to five years without taking the written knowledge test in English.

  • Language Assistance: If you need to take the test, you can use a certified interpreter or a kiosk in your native language.

  • Second Renewal Requirements: On your second renewal, you must pass the written knowledge test in English.

  • Failure to Pass: If you do not pass the English test, you will not be issued driving privileges.
